Chamber Events Help PHS Student and The Lion's Roar Reporter Sharpen Skills

Payson High School sophomore and The Lion's Roar newspaper staff member Sabryne Kelly (pictured behind the camera) is sharpening her skills as reporter at local events.  This afternoon she joined the Payson & Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce for a combined ribbon-cutting and Business of the Month celebration for Total Fitness, 61 South 100 West, Payson.  This was not the first Chamber event for Sabryne, who arrives at such events with assitance from her mom, Marnae Kelly (not pictured). “They’re always really friendly,” Sabryne remarked today of her experience working with the business community.  More to come on today’s event in The Payson Chronicle.

Payson Historical Society: Yesterday and Today - 1850-1950

"Pictures tell the Payson Story," thanks to the Historical Society's L. Dee Stevenson's weekly contributions.  Pictured above is the original Payson High School building as it looked in 1950 with the gymnasium to the south.  The building was constructed in 1912 at 600 South and Main, and dedicated on January 24, 1913.  The school met the wrecker ball in the late 1980s, leaving only the old gymnasium on the grounds.  It was renamed the Bon Ton and used for recreation programs until it was demolished several years later.

Friends Recall Traveling with Lewis Feild at the Beginning of His Rookie Season

Pictured: Lewis Feild at the Ute Stampede Rodeo in Nephi, Utah, on a Friday night, July 13, 2007.  Both Wesley Silcox and Steve Woolsey, well-known local bullriders, were part of the night's Ute Stampede Competition while Lewis assisted as pickup Rider.

Chet Olsen and Mark Jarvis, the former the same age as Lewis Feild, the latter a year younger, recount a memory that will live with them forever: in 1980, they joined rookie cowboy Lewis Feild and already successful Utah cowboy Mickey Young in a self-contained Dodge van with a custom mural painting on the outside and a great stereo system with an eight-track player on the inside, spelling each other off with the driving duties on their way to rodeos in Denver, Colorado; Amarillo, Texas; and San Angelo, Texas.  Find this story and others on the legendary rodeo champion, who passed away on February 15, in this week's edition of The Payson Chronicle.

Part 7 of a Series of Articles Commemorating High Line’s 100th Birthday (1916-2016)

The Castilla Hot Springs resort in Spanish Fork (pictured above) was described in a brochure compiled around 1910 by A.F. Engberg as a beautiful destination for visitors.  Its inclusion in his brochure adds icing on the cake for those whose interest in what the Strawberry Valley Project would do for Utah Valley, once it was completed, had already been piqued by his earlier descriptions of the potential for farming, ranching, gardening, and orchard growing, along with accompanying growth in commerce and graceful living once supplemental water and inexpensive electrical power were both in full flow.

Read more about the Castilla Hot Springs in this week’s edition of The Payson Chronicle.
