“What we have once enjoyed we can never lose.  All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” ~ Helen Keller

Forthcoming funeral services are planned for the following friends from our community. Complete versions of these obituaries may also be found in The Payson Chronicle.

Maurine Ross

Mary “Maurine” Topham Ross, 90, passed away peacefully October 29, 2018 surrounded by her children.

Maurine was born February 14, 1928 to Melvin and Pearl Topham. She learned early in life the value of hard work while helping her parents and siblings on the farm.

Mom told about being out in the fields thinning beets, singing at the top of her lungs, hoping for a talent agent to drive by and offer her a record deal. Mom loved to sing.

Mom and Dad met when they were in grade school. Their love grew for each other and they got married January 25, 1947. Later Mom and Dad were sealed for time and eternity in the Manti Temple.

Mom dedicated her life to her husband and their five children. She was the source of dad’s strength, but always let him take the lead.

Mom had a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit and this helped her find the good in what life had to offer.

Mom and Dad worked side by side in providing for their family. They were able to celebrate their 71st wedding anniversary before dad’s passing in March of 2018.

Mom’s legacy is one of devotion, kindness, hard work, laughter and love. Mom served in various callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints including a mission with dad serving as the Bishop’s Store House.

Maurine is survived by her son Jerry (Marilyn) Ross, Santaquin, and daughter Marianne Stevenson, Central Valley, Daughter-in-law Sandy (Dan) Davis, 10 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren; sister Thelma (Don) Gibson and two brothers-in-law and five sisters-in law.

Maurine is preceded in death by her Sweetheart, sons Michael, Jan, and Bradford; son-in-law Brent Stevenson, and her siblings, two brothers and four sisters, and countless family and friends.

Mom we know that you are singing to dad and the boys.

The family would like to thank, with our sincere hearts, Seasons of Santaquin and their great staff, special care giver and friends Kori Vermer, Bonnie Ballard, Santaquin Second Ward, and all of our dear family and friends for their love and support.

There will be a viewing Friday, November 2nd from 10:00-11:30 am at Brown Family Mortuary, 66 South 300 East Santaquin. Graveside service will follow at 12:00 pm at the Santaquin City Cemetery. Share condolences at www.brownfamilymortuary.com.

Growth In Payson

According to government projections, Payson is expected to grow by an additional 48,000 residents by 2050. A steering committee has been working to come up with a general plan that will take into consideration all the demands that are anticipated to come with this growth.
The committee met yesterday in the Payson City Council Chambers for the final in a series of meetings leading up to a public open house planned for Thursday, November 8. Pictured here is Assistant Payson City Planner Daniel Jensen (standing, left) chatting with City Planner Jill Spencer and Kirk Beecher, Vice Chair of the Payson Planning Commission, at the end of yesterday’s meeting.
The open house, which promises to “explore options for Payson’s future,” will take place in the City Center Banquet Hall (south doors), located at 439 West Utah Avenue, Payson.

Football and Halloween

Marci Aston is pictured cutting the hair of a regular customer, Dallas, who drives all the way from Provo to her shop, Classic Beauty & Barber in Payson’s east-side professional district. If his name is any indication, Dallas is a true blue Cowboys fan. Meanwhile, Ms Aston roots for team Packers. This is clear in the Green Bay swag intermingled in the decor, all the way down to the Brett Favre jersey by the salon’s workstation door. What’s also apparent, at least this month, is that Ms Aston loves Halloween. Each year she decks her shop with ghouls and cobwebs, and is sure to set aside plenty of treats for visitors of all ages, and this year is no exception. Be sure to stop by Classic Beauty & Barber, at 875 East 100 North #6, for some Halloween style before the holiday passes, and the ghouls and cobwebs rest for the season.

Behind The Wheel

Candy and gum packages spell out sentiments shared by residents who are grateful for the difficult and necessary work of the local fire and rescue crew.  Veteran Payson firefighter Stan Spencer is pictured seated behind the edible card assembled carefully by hand on poster paper. Meanwhile, the 2018 Payson Fire and Rescue coloring contest winners, students from five Payson elementary schools, enjoyed lunch and a discussion with firefighters in an adjacent gathering hall inside the Payson Fire Station, October 10.  The students were transported safely from their schools to the station at 45 East 100 South that day, then back to their classrooms after in both a fire engine and ambulance. Mr Spencer was among the drivers behind the wheel. Find more on this story in this week’s print edition of The Payson Chronicle.

Firefighters and Ambulance Crew Treat Student Artists to Lunch at Payson Fire Department

Smoke billowing from the Payson Fire Station yesterday raised no alarm, sans the signs of good eats to come.  The smoke was coming from a barbecue grill outside the red brick building on the corner of First East and First North, where Mickey Lane (pictured above), a twenty-three-year Payson Ambulance engineer, could be found at work with spatula and tongs in hand.  Mr Lane was cooking up hot dogs and burgers for firefighters, ambulance team members, and a talented crew of students from each of the five Payson elementary schools, winners of the Payson Fire Department’s annual coloring contest. The Wednesday lunch, made complete with a ride to and from the schools in both an ambulance and fire truck, along with a special presentation by Payson Firefighters, served as reward for the contest winners from each grade at Barnett, Park View, Spring Lake, Taylor, and Wilson Elementary schools.  More to come in next week’s edition of The Payson Chronicle.

By Lana Hiskey
Patty Maloy
Patty Maloy, former lunch clerk at Cherry Creek Elementary and current lunch clerk at Spring Lake Elementary in Nebo School District, was awarded the Employee of the Year for both the State of Utah and the Western Region by the School Nutrition Association.
Known for her enthusiasm for life and good nutrition, Patty has gone above and beyond to promote good nutrition in the lives of students. Patty was instrumental in helping Cherry Creek Elementary become the first school in Nebo School District to offer a food-sharing station. To prevent so much food from getting thrown away at lunchtime, the food-sharing station allows students to donate their untouched food for other students to take home and enjoy over the weekend.
During the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Weeks, Patty plans creative activities to get students involved and excited about good nutrition.  Patty invites parents, college mascots, and high school athletes to join in the events at the cafeteria.
