PICTURES TELL THE PAYSON STORY -- PAYSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY: PAYSON CO-OP


The Payson Cooperative Mercantile and Manufacturing Institution was organized in 1869, writes L. Dee Stevenson of the Payson Historical Society in this week's column, "Pictures Tell The Payson Story." They were originally located in the Hancock Building, located on the southeast corner of today’s Main Street and 100 North. In 1872 they had a new building erected at 11 South Main, just south of the Payson Exchange Bank. The organization was reorganized and T. H. Wilson was appointed manager. Twenty-six years later in 1898 Mr. Wilson bought the business and it continued as T. H. Wilson and Sons until about 1922. He then sold his stock to ZCMI in Salt Lake City. His son, Stanley, served as manager for about eighteen months.

Mourning the Passing of Friends: Forthcoming Funeral Services

Miriam Dixon Theobald


Miriam Dixon Theobald passed away peacefully at home in Salem, Utah, April 18, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones.  She was born to Leona Pearl Boyle and Flintoff Clyde Dixon in Payson, Utah on September 12, 1924 the youngest of four children.

Miriam met her husband, Evan J. Theobald, at a dance rehearsal practicing for a Gold and Green Ball.  He was home on leave from the Navy and after a short courtship they were married on May 15, 1946 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.  Their life together was spent in Logan, Utah, Fort Worth, Texas, Kaysville, Utah, Edgemont Utah, La Canada, Diablo, California and Salem, Utah.  Everywhere they lived they always had a bounteous garden and enjoyed sharing it with everyone.  Miriam loved to can and freeze every vegetable and fruit.  She is famous for her pickles.

Miriam enjoyed doing all kinds of handwork, especially embroidery.  She gave it every Christmas to her family and friends.  She was an avid reader.  She was gifted in cooking, baking, candy making and other self-reliant skills.  Miriam always used her talents while serving in many different positions in the church, but her favorite calling was as a relief society teacher.  She was grateful to have a lovely singing voice like her mother and used her gift of music wherever she lived.

Evan and Miriam served as Stake Missionaries and served a service mission in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on the church cattle ranches.

Miriam used her love for drama by writing programs and performing as Mini Pearl in the annual Hee Haw Program when they were Snowbirds in St. George.  Jay and Miriam had so many good friends and loved living there in the winter months. 

Miriam is survived by her children, Evan Dale (Nan) Payson, Utah, Daughter DeAnn Pierce (Jeffery) Glendale Arizona, Roger Dean Salem, Utah, Allen Dixon Cortez Colorado, and J. Dee Mapleton, Utah.  She has 17 grandchildren, 10 grandsons and 7 granddaughters and 36 great grandchildren who have been so caring and kind to her.

Her husband of 61 ½ years of marriage passed away in 2009.  Her parents, 2 brothers, Jack and Clyde and one sister Kathryn preceded her in death.

The family would like to express appreciation to Canyon Hospice fort he gentle care of their mother.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Payson Band Concerts or the Peteetneet Historical Society in Payson, Utah. 

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Salem West Stake Center Chapel,695 South 300 West, Salem, Utah .  Family and friends may visit Sunday evening, April 23, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 187 S. Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah and on Monday morning at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Salem City Cemetery.

Coming Up Next Week: Steve Southwick Is Happiest When In The Service Of Others

Steve Southwick was named Lion of the Year, an award presented to him at the Payson & Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce Installation banquet earlier this year. Those who know Mr. Southwick understand that his contributions reach far beyond the Payson club’s efforts.

“I’ve been lucky,” he told The Payson Chronicle.  “I’m doing what I enjoy.  I’m retired and in the position to do that. I think most people would in my position, they’d do the same thing.  These last years of my life are the happiest.  They really are.”


Throwback Thursday (1993): Chronicle Powers That Be Interview With Councilman Russell Hillman


In the early 1990s, The Payson Chronicle published a series of interviews with local "powers that be." Pictured above is the front page of the newspaper published  on January 20, 1993, which featured one such leader, the then-Payson City Councilman Russell Hillman.   The interview took place at the Payson City Landfill.  The site was one of the councilman's responsibilities during his term as city councilman.  The discussion revolved around the landfill's status, possible flooding due to heavy snowfall, and curb and gutter concerns.

Coming up next week: For close to two decades, people have been flocking to Joe Coffee & Espresso for a quick break, a lasting social experience, or to satisfy their hunger with a scrumptious bagel sandwich. Since 2008, the blenders and coffee makers at Joe have been operating at high speed, since the coffee shop started to experience a steady surge in business that has made it one of the hot spots in central Payson.

A Page From The Past

A lot has changed in the layout process of The Payson Chronicle since the newspaper’s inception over a century ago. Pictured above is a paste-up sheet from the July 27, 1994 edition, a page that featured the demolition of Payson Downs Grandstand on South Main Street, where the Hillman Baseball Fields are now located.  Today the newspaper’s pages are created and sent to the press digitally.
