Santaquin City Implements Economic Stimulus Program

Santaquin City will implement an economic stimulus program using federal CARES Act funds on September 1st, which will run through the end of the month.

Every household will be mailed a packet with four (4) Ten-dollar ($10.00) coupons that can be used during the month of September (1st -30th) at any participating Santaquin business. All four (4) coupons can be used at the same time, all at one location; however, residents are encouraged to use the coupons at four (4) different locations and obtain four (4) stamps on their Program Bonus Card which is included in the packet. The completed Program Bonus Card can then be turned in to the Santaquin City Offices for an additional $10 coupon to be used at any participating business.

This stimulus program helps Santaquin’s local businesses by allowing them to collect the cards used at their business and then presenting them to the city; wherein, the city will cut them a check equal to the amount of coupons collected.

Coupons were mailed out on August 27th and all households should have them in their mailboxes by September 1st. For more information go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuX-6mGiK2s or www.santaquin.org.

The Helpers, Music Makers, and Creators of Joy

Mr Rogers remarked that when things seemed scary his mother would tell him to look for the helpers. We’d add to this by saying, in times of trouble turn also to the music makers and creators of joy.
Lately, we’ve found both in singer and songwriter Jesse Thurgood, a music maker who now brings us joy with his series of self-shot backyard sports races, as depicted in the adjoining photograph. Posted on Facebook, these short clips feature highlights from lawn tractor sprinkler races, with Mr Thurgood as Hometown Howard Cosell commentating before a small audience of friends and kin in Backyard USA.
Many will know Jesse Thurgood as a very accomplished recording artist with close Payson ties. He has traveled far and wide and back in his career as a musician. Occasionally you can catch him performing live at Dalton’s Steakhouse in Payson.
We've enjoyed catching him on Facebook. We thank him for enlivening the spirit through his spirited creations of joy.
May the best tractor win!

Janice Wheelock

On Monday, August 24, 2020, Evelyn Janice Wheelock continued her eternal progression through death due to natural causes, complicated by congestive heart failure.  She was 86.

Janice was born March 29, 1934 in Santaquin, Utah to Eugene Lafayette Wheelock and Evelyn Johnson Wheelock.  Gene and Evelyn reared her in Mammoth and Santaquin, Utah.  She attended schools in Santaquin and Payson.  Later, she graduated with an Associate’s Degree in medical assisting from Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California.  She was proud to have worked at Vandenberg Air Force Base as a field engineer on the Minuteman and Titan Missiles.

Janice married Donald Ernest Spainhower on February 3, 1952 in Las Vegas, Nevada; and their union was later solemnized in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  They divorced in 1972.

A beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Janice will be sorely missed by family and friends from Santaquin, Payson, Ogden, and Layton, Utah, as well as Lompoc, California.

Through her entire life, Janice heeded inspirations from her Heavenly Father, especially amid family crisis, to make important decisions about raising her children in good environments.  For her fortitude, her children are eternally grateful.  Her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was grounded in her soul, and she honored her magnificent pioneer heritage by embracing all things virtuous and of good report:  Church service, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, American Legion Auxiliary, Utah Boys and Girls State Conventions, Santaquin Museum Committee, Boy Scouts of America, high school class groups---the Iggly Gigglys---and many choirs.  She loved singing Handel’s Messiah during virtually every Christmas season of her adult life.  In 2010, Janice achieved the high honor of Wood Badge in the Boy Scouts of America.  She loved music, drama, arts and crafts, and sports, especially baseball, and served as manager/coach of championship little league teams in Lompoc.  She was also adept at analyzing handwriting and dreams.  She knew who she was and used her talents to bless her family and society.

Janice had a wonderful love of history and nostalgia, shown by her various collections, such as antiques, dolls and other sentimental items.  She produced beautiful and meaningful scrapbooks and photos all her life, and her unpretentious sense of humor was delightful!  Especially endearing was her appreciation of diversity in people.  She loved and welcomed everyone into her home and life.

Janice is survived by her ex-husband, Don; six children: Ann (Harry, deceased husband) of Syracuse, Utah; Bonnie (Jean) of Washington Terrace, Utah; Steven (Linda, ex-wife) of Saint George, Utah; Judy (Kerry) of Syracuse, Utah; David (Sherry) of Huntsville, Utah; and Michael (Stacey) of South Jordan, Utah.  Her posterity also includes 29 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Evelyn, her younger brother, Lee Wheelock, and a son-in-law, Harry Scott.

Janice’s family are grateful for the loving care given by Alice and others of Sunset Hospice, Apple Village Assisted Living, and Stonehenge of Ogden.

A Viewing will be held at Brown Family Mortuary in Santaquin at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 29, and the Graveside Service will follow at 10:00 in the Santaquin Cemetery.  Bring a lawn chair and maybe an umbrella for shade.

Mourning the Passing of Friends: Forthcoming Funeral Service

"What we have once enjoyed we can never lose.

Forthcoming funeral services are planned for the following friends from our community. Complete versions of these obituaries may also be found in The Payson Chronicle.

Lylia Gladys (Porter) Carlisle Nelson

June 16, 1930 ~ August 20, 2020 (age 90)

Lylia Gladys Porter Carlisle Nelson was born 16 June 1930 in Chino Valley, Arizona, the fifth child of Cyril Vickory Porter and Gladys Vivian Despain.

Lylia’s early childhood was spent in Heber, Arizona. She was only five when her father passed away  but she remembered sitting on his lap and learning to sing. That was the beginning of her lifelong love of music.

Her growing up years were not always easy. There were lots of chores to be done as she helped her mother and brothers, and they grew to be a strong loving family, having lots of fun along the way. After moving to Prescott, cousins joined in that fun.

Lylia began music lessons when she was six years old and by the age of ten she was playing the piano for Primary. After being taught to play the organ, she was the ward organist when she was 16. For most of her life she was either playing or directing music.

Lylia met her future husband, Grant, in 1947 on his first day in the mission field, as she often helped the missionaries with music. She and Grant wrote to each other during his mission. When he was released, he came back to Prescott with his parents who had come to pick him up. Grant proposed, she accepted, and with her mother’s approval, they were sealed in the Arizona temple 24 May 1949. Leaving her family behind, she moved with Grant to Payson, Utah, taking her music with her. She was welcomed in to the Carlisle family and her new home.

While helping to raise eight children, she continued to serve in the Church and community, accompanying small groups, wards choirs, singing in choirs, and being part of a trio with two of her best friends. She began teaching piano lessons in 1951 and for nearly 40 years, she shared her love for music with her students. Many of her grandchildren were blessed to be taught by her.

After becoming an empty nester, she worked as a Chapter I reading assistant at Taylor elementary school. Of course, she was always ready to help with anything musical at the school.

The temple was always a special place for her; she had some of her most precious moments there. During the dedication of the Provo temple, she was part of a group who sang in the celestial room. She and Grant worked together in the baptistery in the Provo temple. That was one of the most beautiful experiences they shared together.

Grant passed away April 2009 after nearly 60 years together.

Lylia was blessed with another loving companion when she married Carl Nelson, a longtime friend and music lover.

Lylia has now gone home to join her parents, siblings, one great granddaughter, Kaylee, and her beloved Grant. She leaves behind her husband Carl and her eight children: Linda, Calvin, Marvin, Shanna, Dennis, Susan, Jeff, and Daren. She also leaves behind 29 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

She has been a loving and faithful example to us all. She will be missed and loved by all who knew her.

Graveside services will be held Monday, August 24, 2020 at 10:00 am at the Payson City Cemetery, 400 North 800 East.

White Feather Rocks At Memorial Park Fair

It was fitting that White Feather Rocks of Santaquin would have a presence at Saturday’s business fair in Memorial Park, Payson.  The business, owned by Jim and Loretta Moshier, has been named August Business of the Month by the Chamber of Commerce, an award that will be feted at the shop on Santaquin Main Street later this week.

Mr Moshier oversaw their booth in Payson.  Glistening rocks and jewelry were laid out, a sampling of what is offered at their physical location.   “We have rough rocks, we have finished jewelry,” along with lapidary finely polished rocks that are turned into jewelry, he described the store’s offerings, he explained.  “We have metaphysical supplies.”

Payson & Santaquin Area Chamber Of Commerce Celebrate End Of Summer With Pickleball Tournament And Small Business Fair

Pictured: Eliza Day, owner of Day Designs Stuff, holds a resin pyramid that she made for her daughter to highlight the medicine and items that are required by someone living with diabetes.

“I’m a resin artist and mixed media artist,” Eliza Day said as she stood over the trinket dishes, jewelry, and car coasters set out for Saturday’s Payson & Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce small business fair. The event was held in Memorial Park, Payson, a stone's throw away from the pickleball courts and tournament hosted, too, by the local chamber.

“I do paintings and different things with resin and glitter and all sorts of other things,” she said of her business, which she operates largely through the online marketplace Etsy at https://www.etsy.com/shop/4LittleDays

Her biggest sellers these days include resin pyramids, which are made with objects significant to their owners.

“My glitter paintings are really big, too,” she said.

Aside from her Etsy shop, she has a presence on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok, operating under Day Designs Stuff.
