Santaquin Fire Department Reports on Tuesday Night's Shed Fire

By Andrea Urban
Santaquin Fire PIO

The night sky was lit up Tuesday evening when a residential shed in Santaquin went up in flames.
The fire started sometime around 8:20 PM on Tuesday, October 27 in a wooden structure used as a workshop, shed and storage area.

Santaquin Fire, Payson Fire and Genola Fire responded to a call for a structure fire at approximately 140 North Center Street in Santaquin. "There were at least one propane tank and seven Volkswagen engine blocks used for building dune buggy type vehicles," said Santaquin Battalion Chief Ryan Lind. "VW engine blocks are known for containing magnesium, a metal that when burning, reacts with water."

When fire crews applied water to the fire, the burning magnesium reacted and flashed explosively. Typically a class D extinguisher is used to put out a fire that involves burning metals like magnesium but that type of extinguisher is not carried by our departments.  The magnesium continued to react until it was cooled sufficiently by the water.

The shed was a total loss and all contents were also destroyed in the fire. Thankfully, no people were injured in the fire and no other structures were affected.

Santaquin Fire Chief Stephen Olson said, "Due to massive fire damage, the cause of the fire is undetermined but there is NO evidence of criminal activity in this case."

Lind added, "It is believed that a spark or smoldering ember from earlier metal cutting activities is likely to blame for accidentally starting this blaze."

OCTOBER 30, 2015
Halloween Costume Party at Parkway Health Center, 6:30-8 PM; dinner starts at 6:30 PM and raffle at 7:45 PM.  Location:  55 S Professional Way, Payson.

What's going on: The Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center

There’s a lot going on at the Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center.  The Payson Chronicle met with Janean Dean, Payson Community and Cultural Events Coordinator, this afternoon and got the scoop on events folks have to look forward to throughout the holiday season. On Monday, November 2, strands of twinkling Christmas lights will begin to go up, a precursor to all that is to come. The official lighting among them; this will take place on November 27, with hot cocoa and doughnuts for all who join in the celebration.  Students from Barnett Elementary School will be there, too, singing carols to warm hearts and help spread joy. More to come in the print edition of The Payson Chronicle.

Veterans Memorial Poppy Field at the Central Utah Veterans Home

The Veteran residents of the Central Utah Veterans Home will partner with the folks at Home Depot and Old Castle, in the development of a poppy field at the veteran’s home in Payson to honor those who never came home from our Nation’s wars.  The poppy field will be approximately 1,600 square feet and will contain 350 plants.

The poppy is symbolic of those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.  The symbolism is noted in many countries and is derived from the famous WWI poem “In Flanders Fields” written by LTC John McCrae to honor his good friend who was killed in battle.  The poem reads:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The poppies will bloom for a two week period each spring around Memorial Day.  During this time, the main hallway overlooking the poppy field will become a memorial to honor and remember the fallen.  The In Flanders Field poem will be displayed.  Veteran residents, staff, family members and the community will have the opportunity to right down the name of anyone they know who paid the ultimate sacrifice on a 5X7card and post the card on the wall near the windows overlooking the poppy field.

The poppies blooming and honoring the fallen will be an annual event we will look forward to each spring.
