Congratulations Kay and Glenna Tanner: Yard of the Week Winners

With nary a weed in sight, but more than enough beauty to spare, Kay and Glenna Tanner’s place is one of near perfection. It is a sight to see and, now, celebrate, as it has been named Yard of the Week.

“All I did was go out and hand him a flower,” Glenna laughed as she explained her role in its design this year.  “And I did it while sitting in a chair.”

An understandable position, however, given Glenna underwent a knee surgery early this year.  But there is little doubt she has contributed to its appeal over the forty years the Tanners have lived in their lovely home.

Landscaping styles have changed at the home, Glenna noted.  The shrubs that were there in the 1970s have long since been removed.  Rockwork would come later, lending favor to the yard’s appearance as well as provide some utility, with the addition of an impressive grill pit added to the backyard.

Plump sullen toads, curious cats, and flickering fowl borne of clay and metalwork watch over the Tanner home.  Glenna calls these figures “geegaw,” and ponders as to when their population might exceed the limits of their yard.  For now, their numbers seem well suited for the space. They add charm to the meticulous lot and complement the floral flourishing throughout.

Petunias, geraniums, and greenery flow from pots and planters, roses and vegetables spike from garden spots carved into the grassy landscape, while the impatiens planted on the eastside patiently await their turn to bloom. Some of the potted plants are gifts the Tanners have received from family, including a few given to Glenna by the couple’s children for Mother’s Day. The whiskey barrels, out front, are replanted each year by Olson’s Garden Shoppe in Payson.  Diane Kitteridge, a longtime Olson’s employee, knows exactly what Glenna likes and fills them accordingly.  (They are fragrant and amazing to see!)

The critters, potted plants, and a fountain flowing near the front door add to the yard’s character. But if one thing deserves particular note, that would be the amount of time its caretakers dedicate to its excellent condition.

“Kay is out there all the time,” Glenna said.  “He loves to do yard work.”
