The Payson Historic District has developed various styles of public buildings, businesses and private homes.  The periods can be divided into the following: (1) Early Settlement Period–1857-1874; Early Railroad and Production Agriculture Period–1875-1890; Later Railroad, Commercial and Industrial Development Period 1891-1908; Neighborhood and Civic Development Period–1909-1925; Specialized Agriculture and Interurban Railroad Period–1926-1946; and the Postwar Development Period–1947.
