Tanner Newbold (PHS 2012) Second Nationally in 3-Point Shooting Percentage for Division One NJCAA

Payson High Alumnus Tanner Newbold now plays for Central Wyoming College in Riverton, Wyoming, where he is helping the team to a 7-1 record in conference play, a 17-3 overall record, and a number-34 ranking nationally. As of January 28th, Tanner is second in three-point percentage nationally, hitting 44 of 82 shots (53.7 %).  It’s no surprise to local fans.  In the last game for the Lions in 2012, against Morgan at State, Tanner hit five three pointers.

He is also shooting 87.5% from 2-point range, connecting on 14 of  16 attempts and 23 of 29 from the free throw line.  He is also averaging 2.5 rebounds per game.  For the Lions last year, his all-around great game helped the team to an undefeated Region Twelve record, winning ten in a row, which this  year’s team added to by winning four before the loss to Spanish Fork on Tuesday, January 22nd.  (The Lions bounced back in a big way on Friday, blowing out Carbon here in Payson, by fifty points.)

Central Wyoming competes in Region IX of NJCAA Division I.  Other schools in the Division are in Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, and Colorado.  Tanner is Central Wyoming’s third leading scorer at 9.4 points per game.
