Time to Dig In!

We take soil seriously at Olson's Garden Shoppe.  Your soil is the soul of your garden.  All the beautiful and delicious things you grow must have good soil to produce their best.  Spring is a great time to plant but it is an even better time to improve your soil.

Mix it up.  Adding a mulch to your soil is a great way to add nutrients so you plant's roots have access to all the food they need to grow healthy and strong.  Nutri- Mulch TM is a great mulch to add to any garden spot or flower bed.  It will help to loosen up your soil and really make a difference in the size of your plants.  Nutri - Mulch is available in bags or bulk.

Start from scratch. Is your soil rocky or just plain dirt? Is your garden spot actually a slab of concrete? Then go up instead of down.  Grow boxes are a great way to skip trying to "fix" your soil.  Simply place a grow box where you want your garden and fill it with a grow box soil mix. Your garden is now ready to plant! The Grow Box Mix is mixture of peat moss, vermiculite, perlite and mulch. This mix is also great for pots and containers. Bring in your box measurements (length x width x height) and Olson's will figure out how much soil you need.

Dress it up. Olson's Topsoil Plus can be used to dress up any soil. Put a 2" layer on any flowerbed  to add nutrients and a rich dark color to your soil. The dark soil will make all your flowers stand out while the nutrients will make your flowers bigger and stronger. Topsoil Plus can also be used in your grow box or vegetable garden. Mix it in or leave it on top. Buy it in bulk and have it delivered today!

Grow it. Olson's Custom Potting Soil has been a staple in Utah county for decades. Olson's Custom Potting Soil is so versatile. The mixture of peat moss, perlite, vermiculite and mulch is great for starting seeds. It is the perfect medium to grow hanging baskets and flower containers. You can even mix it into your flowerbeds or veggie garden. It is sold in an easy to carry bag and available today.

Major Events in Store for Peteetneet in the Months to Come

Community and Cultural Events Director Janean Dean pictured near the Peteetneet's west entrance in October 2015.

Antiques, dancing, and a night of Dutch oven dining and song are some of the new events lined up for the Peteetneet this year.

Janean Dean, Community and Cultural Events Director for Payson City, is excited about what’s in store for the community.  She shared details that have taken shape so far on three major events taking place in May, June, and July.

The Peteetneet Antique & Vintage Expo will take place on Saturday, May 14, with as many as fifty vendor booths with treasures and food to buy located along the west-side lawn entrance of the Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center.

“I am so excited about this one,” Janeen Dean said sifting through the small stack of white looseleaf binders storing the pages of plans laid out so far in preparation for the three new events at the Peteetneet.

Vendors are encouraged to participate in what is anticipated to be a well-attended event.  Each space measures 10X10 and costs $40.  Applications are available at paysoncity.org, under the “Community Events” tab.  Booth space reservations must be made by May 2.

While searching for treasures takes place on the main lawn, appraisals for antiques will be going on inside.  “What’s exciting is that nationally known appraisers, some who have traveled with the Antiques Roadshow will be there,” said Dean.  “They can give you verbal history and tell you the value of your unique treasure.”

These verbal appraisals will be available from 9 AM - 1 PM in the Peteetneet’s Queen’s Room (north-side auditorium) at a cost of $5 per item.  All proceeds will go toward the Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center.

As for those simply wishing to tour the Peteetneet, itself a treasure, the museum will be open to the public that day.  Museum rooms will remain open throughout the duration of the outdoor Peteetneet Antique & Vintage Expo, from 9 AM - 5 PM that day.

A little less than a month after the Expo wraps up, talented local dancers will entertain at the Peteetneet Dance Showcase.  Ms. Dean says, “Bring blankets and chairs to the Peteetneet Ampitheater on June 11.”  The show will run from 6-8 PM and include performances by local dance groups, such as Step in Time, Centennial Dance, and the Dance Spot.

The cost is $3 a person, with proceeds dedicated to Payson City Events.

Finally, make plans now to celebrate the Pioneer Day holiday in Payson at the first annual Central Utah Western Heritage Night, July 23, from 6-9 PM.

Cowboy poetry and song will open the event.  Meanwhile, J&M FORD Dutch Oven Dinner Catering will be cooking up a small feast made of a choice of meat, green salad, baked beans, dutch oven potatoes, buttermilk biscuits, and choice of dessert.

Both are precursors to the night’s main event: A live solo performance by country music singer, Billy Dean.  All will take place at the Peteetneet Amphitheatre.

VIP tickets, which include dinner and the concert, are $25 for adults and $14 for children 11 years and younger. They are in limited supply.  For those wishing only to attend the concert, tickets are $10.  Tickets will be available for purchase through Payson City’s website and in person at the City Center, at 439 West Utah Avenue.
