GARY STALNAKER HANSEN

November 10, 1936 - January 27, 2021


Gary Stalnaker Hansen of Payson, Utah, passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 27, 2021 in his home at age 84.  He was born November 10, 1936 to William Warner Hansen and Rosievell “Stonnie” Stalnaker in Springville, Utah.  He was raised and educated in Payson, Utah.  He graduated from Payson High School and attended Snow College.  He was a missionary for The Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Denmark for two and one-half years. He married Kay Wilson December 16, 1959 in the Salt Lake City Temple.  He was a pharmacy specialist in the U.S. Army for two years at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco and served 5 years in the National Guard.  He worked at Geneva Steel for 36 years in various roles, and especially enjoyed his time in the Fire Department.  Gary was a Payson City councilman and mayor for 10 years.  In 1981 he was recognized as Outstanding Elected Municipal Official in Utah.  He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including Stake High Councilman, Counselor in Bishopric, and Bishop of the Park Ward.

He is survived by his wife Kay and seven children, Scott (Heidi), David (Kristyn), Lori (Brett), Brent (Stacy), Brian (Audrey), Gregg (Dayna), and Sonja (Mike).  He had 29 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kirk William Hansen, granddaughters Brianna Lynn Hansen and Kaitlyn Hansen.

Mary Merlene Sanford Daley



St. George
 – Mary Merlene Sanford Daley, 88, left this earthly existence to be reunited with her sweet Leo on January 25, 2021. She was born Mary Merlene Sanford on March 7, 1932 to Merle J. Sanford and Gladys Marie Taylor in Payson Utah. She married Leo Lynn Daley on April 24,1958. And was sealed in the Provo LDS Temple on March 18, 1974. She is the last of her and Leo’s longtime friends from Payson and surrounding areas. Her cheerful demeanor and caring ways resulted in lifelong friendships, and to know her was to love her. Her passing truly leaves a void in the lives of many. She was a descendant of early pioneer saints. She was a devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother.


Merlene graduated from Payson High School in 1950. She was the Payson Centennial Queen in 1950. She was the President of the Utah Women’s Auxiliary Retail Grocers Association from 1969-1970. She worked side by side with the love of her life, they owned Leo’s Market and car wash in Payson. They went on to open many chicken restaurants throughout Utah. Her dream was to move to St. George, Utah, and it came true in 1976 where they built a beautiful home in Bloomington. She worked at the Bloomington Country Club for a time. They had a restaurant in St. George called Sheriff Hardy’s and Chef’s Palace in Kanab. 


The Daley home was always open to family and friends. They enjoyed traveling to Arizona with many friends and family which was a relaxing and fun time. She was a big sports fan, always loved watching football, baseball, and basketball games. Sunday dinners were a highlight of the week. Merlene loved Christmas celebration. Her trees were always decorated to perfection. Her family Christmas parties were always such fun. She was an immaculate homemaker. She was an elegant lady. But was never afraid to roll up her selves and work. She was a hard worker, seldom idle.


Her hobbies included bowling, playing cards, crocheting and embroidery. She was a animal lover, she always had schnauzer dogs.


Merlene is survived by her children: Debra Elmer Canfield (Fred Dumas) of Ivins, Utah, Karie Lynn Daley Jackson of Tooele, Utah, Alan Leo Daley of Kanab, Utah; 12 grandchildren: Mathew (Melanie) Jackson, Emily (Russell) Spendlove, Blake (Gina) Jackson, Mark (Shelly) Jackson. Audrey Tullis, Alan Jr. (Cindy) Daley, Jamie (Ryan) Glazier, Richard Daley, Clinton (Rachel) Daley, Casey Daley, Krista (Rob) Melling, Darby Nielsen; 28 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters: Nancy (Bob) Greenhalgh and Sandra (Les) Camp; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.


She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo Daley; son, Steven (Fudsy) Elmer and his wife Vickie Bills Elmer; son in-law, Lloyd Jackson; daughter-in-law, Julia Schaugaard Daley; granddaughter, Keira Merlene Nielsen; brother, Richard T. Sanford; and sister, Lorraine Sanford Sutton.


We know a great celebration is being held in the eternal heavens.


We would like to thank Dixie Hospice for their thoughtful and tender care in her last days.


Funeral services were held in St. George, Utah on Tuesday, February 2, 2021at Metcalf Mortuary. Interment was in the St. George City Cemetery. ** Masks are required for those attending services.

DAVID EARL CARTER


David Earl Carter, 80, of Payson, Utah, passed away on January 20, 2021. David was born on September 14, 1940 in Provo, Utah to Earl and Maud Dea Clark Carter. He was a Provo High School graduate. He enlisted into the United States Army right after high school. He served in France and Germany.

After his military service, he worked in the Provo City sanitation department and then at Geneva for over 30 years. He later drove a school bus for Nebo School District and worked at Gladstan Golf Course.

After high school, he married Sheila Kay Rockwell. Together they had 9 children. They were later divorced. He met Linda Mendenhall, the love of his life, and after a fun courtship they married on February 19, 1991 in Springville, Utah. They were sealed a year later in the Provo Temple.

David enjoyed golfing, fishing, and baseball. He was the all-star pitcher in the colt baseball league in high school. He tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals and they wanted him to join the team, but he chose to serve in the military. He coached his kids in baseball. David loved BYU sports, the Jazz, and NY Yankees. His passion was his family, children, and grandchildren.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in various callings.

David is survived by his wife Linda, children: James David Carter, Tammy Lynn Carter (Suzanne), John Steven Carter (Pam), Robert Earl Carter (Keri), Scott Nolan Carter (Joey), Misty Kay Hutchings, Shannon Ludlow (Michael), Haley Sue Harris (Daryle), Matthew John Ludlow (Erin), Jaymes Ludlow (Lindsie), and Clayton Ludlow, 37 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and siblings Deanne Gines, Earline Holley, and Norman Carter.

He was preceded in death by his sons John Sheldon Carter and Steven Lee Carter, great-grandchild Jaden Carter, sister Janet Ross, and his first wife Sheila Kay Rockwell.

Dave loved everyone and everyone loved Dave.

DARYN REID GOODALL

On Sunday, January 17, 2021, Daryn Reid Goodall, loving brother, son, uncle, mentor, and friend, passed away in Los Angeles after a brief hospitalization at the age of 61.


Daryn was born on September 19, 1959 in Payson, Utah to LaRain and Zaloma (Leavitt) Goodall. He graduated from Payson High School in 1976 and studied at Utah State University before beginning a career as a television set decorator. He had an acerbic sense of humor and a firm confidence in his opinions. He loved a good project, and every day of his life was filled with many of them. His favorite quote was, “Lead, follow, or get out of my way.”


He took his work seriously, and never balked at telling his bosses (and family members) how they should do their jobs. He was proud to have served as something of an uncle to the young stars of the Mickey Mouse Club and was a 9-time Emmy nominee for his work on MADTV. He was a guiding light and driving force within the Set Decorators’ Society of America, and served as President and Chairman of the Board, among many leadership roles.


He was a beloved and devoted brother and uncle. Several of his nieces and nephews lived with him as they got their start in their adult lives. He was preceded in death by his father, LaRain, and his sister, DyAna, who he took into his home to care for during the last five years of her life. Her death was a great shock to him. He is survived by His mother Zaloma, his siblings, LeeAnne Waters, Tod, Casey, DaLayn Bing, JoDell, and Fernando. He also considered his good friend Kelly Blanpied to be his sister. He is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews and their children.


He listed well over a thousand friends on his Facebook page. Many of them have responded to his death with fond memories of him. He loved his friends, his family, his work, Hollywood, and life. He touched many lives. 

He will be sadly missed.

Betty Jean McCoy Oberg


Betty Jean McCoy Oberg passed away peacefully at her home on December 31, 2020 surrounded by her loved ones. Betty Jean was born to Don J and Gertrude McCoy of Baraboo, Wisconsin on October 14, 1930. Later she got a younger brother Dean McCoy in 1938.

When she was seven, they moved to Utah for a drier climate. Betty Jean attended Taylor Elementary, Payson Jr High, and graduated from Payson High School. She enjoyed her years in the local schools. 

She married Bernard Oberg in September of 1947. They moved to Genola where they made their home there for 17 years until 1967 when they moved to Payson, where they resided until both their deaths. Betty Jean and Bernard were the parents of two children: Carol (Mike) Pulver of Payson, Utah; and Gary (Vicky) Oberg of Delta, Utah.

Betty Jean spent many years working at Utah Sportswear. She loved to travel with family and enjoyed reading books that she would get from the book exchange. She enjoyed all of the employees that she volunteered with at Peteetneet Cultural Arts Center for many years as they have come and gone. She also enjoyed giving tours to people as they would come through the museum. Sometimes she would even call her grandson Brad to get the “inside track” and let them know if the canyon was safe to drive up. Betty Jean enjoyed attending the Payson City Band concerts. 

Betty Jean is survived by her daughter Carol Pulver, son Gary (Vicky) Oberg, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Dean (Maxine) McCoy, aunt Ellen Gassner and 2 nephews. She was a Grandma and friend to everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents Don and Gertrude McCoy, her husband Bernard Oberg, uncle Harold McCoy and son-in-law Michael Pulver. 

A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 8, 2021 at 12 p.m. at the Payson City Cemetery, 400 North 800 East, Payson.



New Payson High School Logo To Be Revealed January 14



Payson Lions are starting the new year with a brand new appearance.  Payson High School officials announced last week that the school will soon have a new logo.

“The new logo will not replace our green ‘P’, but will act as an additional logo to be primarily used in athletic settings,” they said.


The new design is being kept under wraps until a public unveiling on January 14, 2021.

Kelly Dean Dockstader



Kelly Dean Dockstader, beloved husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend passed away unexpectedly on January 1, 2021 in St. George, Utah. He was 42. 

Kelly was born on August 27, 1978 in Kearns, Utah. He was a bright light in the lives of his family from the day they brought him home. 

Kelly was a generous, kind person with a wonderful vibrant laugh, and he saw the good in everyone. He enjoyed his job at Allconnect and was an amazing sales rep. He loved spending time with his family. He loved to sing and listen to music. He loved driving in fast cars, his motto was full throttle. He had the biggest heart, and he would offer to help anyone, at any time. He was a good mechanic and he loved to hunt. He loved spending every minute with his beautiful daughter Alexis, and he also loved hanging out with one of his favorite nephews, his little buddy Skyler. He loved going on beautiful hikes with his family in sunny St. George. He absolutely loved animals, especially his dogs. 

Kelly is survived by his wife Kayley (Smith) Dockstader, his two children who were the light of his life, Hagen and Alexis Dockstader, his loving parents Kelly and Debra (Carter) Dockstader, his two grandmothers Gwen (Gerber) Dockstader and Lillie Maxine (Ungricht) Carter, and siblings: Darla (Dockstader) Rickey Hathaway, Rodney Dockstader, Taya Leila Carter, and Savannah Hughes Cooley. He was a beloved uncle to all of his nieces and nephews and was deeply loved by many extended family members and friends. 

Kelly was preceded in death by his two grandfathers Elmo “Dock” Dockstader, and Ellis Dean Carter. 

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 587 South 100 West, Payson. A visitation will be held prior to service from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be held at the Payson City Cemetery. The Livestream of the funeral service will be available on Kelly’s obituary page on the Walker Funeral Home website.

Kevin Ray Bulow



Kevin Ray Bulow passed away unexpectedly on December 21st, 2020 surrounded by his wife and kids. He was born December 16, 1957 to William Ray and Doris Bird Bulow of Mapleton, Utah.


Kevin was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His family was his heart and soul. You never saw Kevin without a grandchild in tow. He enjoyed each and every second he had with all of them. He will forever be missed by us all.


He graduated Springville High School in 1976 with High Honors and a full academic scholarship to BYU which he attended for about 2 weeks, then the dove hunt opened and his priorities came first. 

Kevin worked for CenturyLink for 43 years where he made many lifelong friendships.


Kevin married Kathi Blackburn on October 10th, 1986 and raised 5 wonderful children together. Life consisted of sports, bowling,  4 wheeling, hunting adventures, camping and lots of fishing. There was “always a deer just around that corner” and lots of fun and laughter.


Kevin is survived by his mother, Doris Bird Bulow. His wife, Kathi Blackburn Bulow. 5 children; Travis (Brandi) Bulow, Chellsie Blackburn, Kevin (Tina) Blackburn, Jake Bulow and Moriah Bulow. 12 grandchildren; Jaquelle, Justin, Tess, Kyler, Dylan, Lanette, Trevor, Kolson, Kylah, Stetson, Jaxson and Curtis and 1 great grand daughter Paisley.

 

2 brothers Bill (Anittra) and Mike (Jackie), sister in law, Diane Bulow and 8 nephews and 1 niece. His father Ray and brother Brett welcomed him with open arms in Heaven.


Viewing will be Thursday, January 7th from 6-8 pm and 11:30-12:30 Friday January 8th at Wheeler Mortuary 82 W 400 N Mapleton.


Graveside Services will be Friday, January 8th at 1 pm at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
