International Visitors Join Payson Lions For Night of Thanksgiving
The gift of sight is high among humanitarian concerns shared by chapters of the Lions Club International. Meeting at the Peteetneet for their bi-monthly meeting November 14, Payson Lions Club members met with a group of gentlemen who work directly with eyesight beneficiaries worldwide.
Gordon Carter of the Charity Anywhere Foundation, of Bountiful, Utah, discussed efforts in South America and beyond that are engaged in the disbursement of eyeglasses among impoverished populations worldwide. Citing their eyeglass and monetary contributions, Mr. Carter applauded the Lions Club’s generosity.
Mr. Carter was joined that evening by associate, Wes Whatcott, along with Dr. Jesus Asila, Carlos Celin, Dr. Dennys Paez, Victor Toaquiza, and Dr. Washington Zambrano, a group of professionals from Brazil and Ecuador who work directly with the charity and populations in need. The guests were treated to a special observance of a North American holiday: Thanksgiving, as the Lions shared in their traditional club feast.
They hoped to return to South America with a cargo crate filled with items needed by populations with whom they work. Crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, dental, and medical needs are among items lacking in these regions. With the Christmas season upon us, they hoped also to have toys and bikes to return to children whose families cannot afford the luxury of such things.
Payson Lions expressed an interest in helping the group. Calls for contributions continued among the local chapter after the meeting had come to a close.

J Jeans and Things Sixth Annual Fall & Winter Fashion Show Unfolds This Weekend
The autumn chill and recent flurries call for new additions to local wardrobes. Showcasing some of the season’s freshest styles will be J Jeans and Things of Payson, as the clothing boutique’s owner, Jamie Rolfe invites everyone to attend the Fall & Winter Fashion Show. The event takes place this Saturday, November 9, at 1 PM, at Olson’s Garden Shoppe in Payson.
Entering its sixth year, the Fall & Winter Fashion Show provides guests the splendid opportunity to view new fashion without traveling outside Payson. Forty models from Utah Valley will stroll the catwalk that day. Rolfe’s daughter, Lilly, age five, will be among the youngest. She has been modeling for J Jeans and Things fashion shows, which occur twice a year, all her life.
J Jeans’ clothing is available for purchase at its Payson location, a boutique beautifully incorporated into the Olson’s Garden Shoppe building, as well as online and at events Rolfe participates in throughout the year.
Be it on the catwalk or on the rack, expect to find popular prints, perfect for mixing: stripes, polka dots, along with the Aztec and Chevron designs. LA Idol Jeans, maxi skirts--including maxi skirts for young girls--are among the styles you’ll find. Printed leggings, stylish jackets, and sweaters are available for purchase, too, all at great prices. New this year are styles in sizes up to triple-extra-large, as Rolfe hopes to accommodate most all her customers’ needs.
Expect to find the season’s most appealing floral designs, too. Olson’s Garden Shoppe’s co-owner and Rolfe’s mom, Chris Olson notes that poinsettias and floral arrangements for upcoming holidays will be a part of the runway decor. Planning ahead for festive celebrations, visitors can place orders now to ensure they will have their decorating needs well taken care of ahead of time..
With each purchase made at J Jeans this Saturday comes a special gift. J Jeans’ Fall & Winter Fashion Show may take place on Saturday, but the sales will occur all throughout the week.
Be sure to pay this fashionable place a visit this week, as well as on Saturday when the Fashion Show rolls out new styles for fall and winter. Olson’s Garden Shoppe and J Jeans and Things are located at 1190 West 400 North in Payson.

Jake and Helen Kester: Cultivating More Than Just Crops
Jake and Helen Kester (right-left) with a throng of carrots dug from their garden at their home at 355 East 100 North, Santaquin. |
“Cultivators
of the earth are the most virtuous and independent citizens,”
Thomas Jefferson said. Among
local residents of whom this praise speaks well are Jake and Helen
Kester. The Kesters have cultivated their spacious Santaquin lot
since the 1970s, with a plentiful vegetable garden, remarkable flower
patches, and fruit bearing bushes and trees growing throughout.
Fruit trees planted two by two—red
delicious and granny green apples, cherries, and Anjou and Bartlett
pears, add sweetness to life. As do the sprawling red, black, and
gold raspberries, and blackberries that grow and are picked by the
Kesters for themselves and others to indulge upon immediately or in
baked desserts.
Among the crops planted in their
vegetable garden this year were tomatoes, sweet peppers, yellow and
green bush beans that grew prolifically as far back as in June,
carrots, beets, zucchini, butternut, patty pan, and acorn squash
(though, the latter grew less large in size this year). Flowering
kale marks the edges of rows to signify where it's best not to step,
preserving the lifespan of the delightful eats and flowers
interspersed delightfully.
Plant success varies according to
circumstance and care. This past season, hot and dry, bore down
heavily on gardens throughout the region. A drip watering system
aided the Kesters with watering concerns, as it has done in seasons
past. Switched on in the cooler evening hours, water runs directly
to the roots, Helen noted, where it is required. They system does
require some work in the beginning, she added. Jake re-installs drip
system each spring, after the plowing and preparing the soil for a
new crop. But the effort is worthwhile in the end.
Aside from eating, prime picks are
reserved for entries in the Onion Days Flower Show. This is where
the Kesters' gardening expertise joins Helen's imagination and
creativity, with award-winning arrangements the result.
Drawing upon the best of her
flowers--asters, dahlias, marigolds, roses, and zinnias, Helen
painstakingly cuts, arranges, stores, and then transports her
stunning entries for competition in the local event. Helen has won
countless ribbons and prizes throughout the years. She has also
contributed prizes to other winners who join her in the competition.
Contribution extends even further, as
Helen arranges flower bouquets in vases for her fellow parishioners
to enjoy during services at her church in Payson.
The Kesters' labors result in a
plentiful range of edible and visual delights to enjoy and share with
others each year. Not only are they cultivators of the earth, but
cultivators of gracious kindness within the community.
Pictured: (top) Branches are weighted down by abundant red delicious apples blushing into their ripened hue; (center) newly picked black walnuts from a tree located in the backyard; (right) vibrant yellow and green beans have been in plentiful supply since June.
