Helen and Maynard Scott Named Grand Marshals for Onion Days

Payson has benefited many years from the unselfish service and support of events, activities, and traditions provided by Maynard and Helen Scott, who love their community and family unconditionally. Their children, the light of their lives, Elena and Craig, received full support from their parents when they were part of the Payson High School Marching Band and when Elena performed as part of Payson Community Theater, and the experience the Scotts gained during fundraising efforts for the band later became useful as they spread their volunteer spirit into the community at large.

Yard of Week Season Draws to a Close With Wally and Cindy Buhler's Payson Home

The Wally and Cindy Buhler home

The Payson Chronicle's 2012 Yard of the Week season wraps up with a whopper. The final award goes to a yard recognized for its stunning floral landscaping, along with a roadside mailbox that is a fisher's dream. It is the home of Wally and Cindy Buhler at 333 South 600 East, Payson.

The Buhler yard is a radiant picture to view while traveling along the Sixth East route to Payson Canyon. Rock landscaping carves into the sloped front yard, nestling beds from which scarlet, white, violet, yellow, and blue blossoms spill over, all the creation of Wally.

The plump green and white widemouthed fish mailbox near the street is symbolizes Wally's love for fishing. It serves as well as a landmark for those who plan to visit, according to Cindy. They simply tells folks to look for the “blue house with a yellow door and fish mailbox” when giving directions.

The property was originally owned by Cindy's great-grandparents, the late Mike and Mae Andrew. It had been an orchard, dotted with apple, cherry, and peach trees, before she and Wally built their home in 2000 and began landscaping the vast yard. The fruit trees may be gone, but a grapevine rooted in the property's origins persists as part of a decorative foundation near the front entrance and the flowerbeds carved throughout.

Wally fills these beds each year himself. He starts by planting the taller Salvia, followed by dainty Lobelia, and finally, vibrant petunias that grow in abundance. He started in May this year and took two days to finish planting Marigolds sprout here and there, but they became less prominent once the petunias took off.

Growing behind the scenes is a vegetable garden, another area overseen by Wally. Crops this year include tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, and peas. The latter may no longer be harvested, as peas do best in cooler temperatures, but according to Wally, they did especially well this year during their points of harvest.

Cindy's domain includes the flowering pots and decorative accoutrements sprinkled from front to back. Care has been made as well to maintain a space along the front porch from which the past can be recalled. Rocks and shells picked up during trips to Lake Powell are rest in a wide bowl. Pots hand-painted by the Wally and Cindy's grandchildren are displayed on a shelf; they hold plants and recollections of sweet tikes who have since become adolescents.

Cindy can recall taking photos of her grandchildren a decade ago, while they were young and the yard new. They have grown along with the evolving landscape, creating lovely memories to enjoy today.

Duane and Pat Curtis's Pristine Place a Perfect Pick for Yard of Week

Duane and Pat's pristine Payson yard.

Picturesque and pristine, Duane and Pat Curtis's corner Payson lot has earned the title Yard of the Week. Or, more so, the yard's caretakers.

Accolades for its beauty were obvious in its selection. But most prominent were the kudos to the never-ending effort which Duane, especially, takes create and sustain the splendid site.  With temperatures high and dry, this year's upkeep has been particularly challenging, he said.  But he has been able to keep up with all it takes to maintain a lawn that covers much of the third-acre lot, along with the robust vegetable garden, flowers, shrubs, and trees that range from pine and evergreen to a large California redwood planted out back.

Duane may attribute at least some of the work he does as “just puttering around.” But the description is modest when compared with the result. Drive by this week and see for yourself.

Duane and Pat Curtis relax in a backyard swing.
A pair of well loved dogs, Taya and Misty wait eagerly for Duane and Pat to come in from the yard.

Chamber Granted Advance Seating at Huish Performing Arts and Cultural Center

Chamber Leads Group members meet in the restored executive boardroom at the Huish.  Pictured above are (front row, left-right)  Laura Evans, Maurice Evans, Colin Logue, (middle row, left-right) Carolyn Bowman, Sherrie Watson, Zach Voorhees, (back row, left-right) Eric Buchanan, Shaun Martin, and Lou Ballamis.

Payson Chamber Leads Group members, August 16, were given an advance viewing of what is destined to become the Huish Performing Arts and Cultural Center. It is the site of the former Huish Theatre, at 98 West Utah Avenue, and current restoration project overseen by Dr. Gordon Taylor.

Taylor credits the project to his wife, the late Karen Taylor. She convinced him to purchase the building and restore it for cultural purposes, he said, soon after another endeavor with which he was involved—the installation of the outdoor elevator at the Peteetneet Academy and Cultural Arts Center—was finished. The couple funded the purchase with the sale of property they owned.

Taylor noted last week that installation of the final of a three-phase power system had been completed the day before, August 15. Meanwhile, construction still in process throughout most of the building, the Leads Group met with Taylor inside the newly restored executive boardroom. The room's chairs and conference table, noted Taylor, were products of contribution- a donation made by Michelle Fitzwater and family of Payson.

The Fitzwater family's contribution has been one of many. According to Taylor, the the restoration project, along with the theatre's maintenance and management, once up and running, is also a product of community effort. He lists a large group who bring to the table his and her own individual talent.

A board of directors is comprised of Taylor, who serves as president, joined by Brian Hulet as vice-president, Mike Hardy as treasurer, with Lana Sumsion maintaining contacts, and Marva Loy Eggett serving as president's assistant.

Signing on as stage developer and to oversee acoustics is Richard Lindsey, while Glenn Boyle has worked as the project's structural engineer, and Dan Ellsworth is the electrical consultant. Dale Barnett has brought the tools of his trade with heating and air conditioning work. Clark Kay and Craig Zeeman are noted as project contractors. Mez Stewart and Steve Decker have made their contributions as architects, while Dan Ellsworth has dug trenches, Dani Fati laid concrete, and Scott Phillips brought in the heavy equipment.

Lisa Hansen has agreed to take on the task of overseeing children's music, Ruth Ann Christensen over theatrical performance, Chris Jensen the theater, Norene Jensen involved with both theater and music, Joan Landes over music, Michelle Fitzwater involved with children's theater, Jeff Cooper engaged in vocal events, and Steve Twede, the community theater, according to Taylor.

Former Huish Theatre owner, Paul Mower will return to the theatre to oversee films slated to make a return to the screen. “It will be successful again,” Taylor said. “I know it will.”
Payson historian and former Main Street business owner, Cal Reece was among the group treated to a tour of the theatre.  He is pictured here on the southwest corner of the theatre.

Dr. Gordon Taylor discusses the timeline of restoration at the old Huish Theatre to Chamber Leads Group members, who gathered for their August 16 meeting inside the completed executive meeting room upstairs.  Reconstruction continues throughout much of the rest of the old movie theater.

A view from the back of the old Huish Theatre as it appears today, prior to pending restoration.

Hand-written instructions remain on the wall of what was once the projection room at the Huish, years after the Payson movie theater's last picture show.

Congratulations Sue Ellen Henderson, Yard of Week Winner

Colorful contrasting blossoms stretch from a sprinkling of whimsical accents in peerless harmony at Sue Ellen Henderson's home. Bountiful fruit trees out front are inviting to the senses as well. It is the entire package, however, which makes the yard the apple of a few eyes, namely those who saw to it that Sue Ellen's place would be awarded Yard of the Week.  For complete story, see this week's edition of The Payson Chronicle, available on stands now.
Delicate alyssum border a fragrant garden spot.
Sue Ellen enjoys incorporating whimsical items, such as the butterfly above, throughout her yard.
Structural layers have been carved into the sloping front-yard landscape.

Barbara Jean Walton Davis
July 11, 1935 ~ January 6, 2014
Boy, oh-boy are we lucky – we don’t have to wonder what Mom wanted in her obituary! We KNOW what she wanted because she wrote it all down! In her ‘Living Will’ she wrote, “Have whomever of you that can, write my obituary in a kind way.  Be truthful, but show mercy.  Don’t start it…our mother, grandmother, aunt and so forth, I really hate that. BE REAL…OUR WONDERFUL, KIND, FUNNY, LOVING, THIN, RICH, MOTHER CROAKED TODAY! HA!”  We also know she didn’t want a somber funeral. Mom wanted a party with balloons! So put your arms up in the air (palms up) and in a chant say, “PARTY! PARTY! PARTY!” (Just like she always did)!
Mom was the best, most wonderful, most fun, most creative, funniest, kindest, least judgmental mother that ever lived. She taught us how to love and serve our fellow man without any strings attached, and she taught us to find value in ALL human beings. Mom had more friends than we can count, and she made everyone one of them feel they were the most important person in the world. Whenever asked which child or friend was her favorite, she would respond “whoever needs it the most”.
Mom graduated from Payson High School (1953), married shortly after, and had 9 children. She accompanied her husband around the world with the US Air Force.  She lived in the most interesting and wonderful places, such as England, the Philippines, Japan, and all over the US.  After raising her children Mom went back to school and got her Associates Degree in Applied Science-Medical Secretary in 1990. She worked as a medical receptionist-secretary for Utah Valley Regional Hospital, where she made life-long friends and relationships. Mom also worked as a receptionist and information specialist for Uinta National Forest until she retired in 2008. Mom was named “Mother of the Year” by the Governor of Utah in 1999, she was a Notary Public, she sang for many years in the LaNesta Chorus, she danced with ‘Jean’s Golden Girls’, and she claimed to be the Onion Princess because her dad was the Payson Onion King (oh how she loved Payson Onion Days!).  Mom loved going to club, collecting ruby red glass, attending plays, going to get a drink, and wearing sparkly earrings. Her greatest treasures were her sisters and brothers, her children, her cat ‘Jazz’, her friends, and most of all, her Savior.
Mom was a life-long devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many callings in the church, such as Relief Society President and Young Women’s president for both her ward and for her stake. She was dedicated, organized, and always gave 110% in everything she did! Mom had an intensely strong testimony and shared it best by her exceptional example.
Barbara, daughter to Bruce and Ruth Walton, married to George Douglas Davis for 37 years (later divorced). They had 9 children: Douglas (Miriam) Davis, Lydia Woolsey, Wendy (Mike) Aragon, Eric (Sherry) Davis, Janet (Brock) Almond, Darian Davis, Christine (Michael) Hunter, Jamie (Cori) Walton, Micheal Davis (who preceded her in death), and her chosen son Michael (Kristen) Krus from Sweden.   Also Ron and Amy Brown, who never left her heart as family. Barbara is survived by her siblings: Christine (Gerry) Ollerton, Trita (Claire) Davis, John (Carolyn) Walton, and Michael Walton. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Joseph (Joey) Walton, and Jetta Walton Quinlan Cloward.  Mom’s life was blessed by 39 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.
One last selection from her ‘Living Will’: “Thank you so much for all the wonderful and kind things you did for me here on this earth. Thank you so much for your love, for listening ears, telephone calls, trips to the hospital/doctors with me, birthday fun, dancing and hugging me. Thanks for understanding me…  I’ll see you soon if you not already there when I come through. I hope I can do whatever I have to do in dignity and faith…See you soon!   Barbara J. Davis, someone who loves the gospel and the God that organized it!!!”

Terry was born in Payson, Utah to Cloy and Edna Steele.  He grew up in Santaquin where he made many good friends.  He had a special bond with his family and his cousins were some of his best friends.
Terry met the love of his life, Judy Moore, in high school.  They were married on Friday, April 13, 1961 and Terry always said that that was the luckiest day of his life.  They were blessed to spend 52 years together.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti, Utah Temple.  They have five children; Terri Lynn (Jeff) Trujillo, Darrel (Patti) Steele, Brenda (Jay Dee) Shupe, Erik Steele and Shelley (Les) Davies, all of Santaquin.
He worked at the Burgin Mine in Eureka, Utah, and then at Geneva Steel until it closed.  He then worked at the Spanish Fork Foundry.  His passion in life besides his family was a love of being on the desert looking for rock samples.  His dream was realized when he had the opportunity to work as a consulting geologist with his cousin/brother Bob Steele.  He realized what a gift it was that he was blessed with the opportunity to spend so many hours doing what he loved.  He always said he felt close to his Father in Heaven on the desert.

Tommy Lee Kidman
“The world has been forever changed. Today we lost our hero, soldier, father, husband, son, best friend and little brother."

Tommy Lee Kidman, aka Buckner, Little Bro, Reptile Man, Doc or Tommy Guns, left us July 15, 2013 from Schofield Barracks, Wahiawa, Hawaii at age 25.  He was born June 3, 1988 in Evanston, Wyoming to Tommy Joe Kidman and Jana Hofer Olson.  He attended Payson High School and Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, Wyoming graduating in 2006.  He married Lacey Grove September 21, 2009.

Tommy attended basic training in 2010 and served our country in Afghanistan as an Army Medic from April 2011 to March 2012.

Tommy always had a smile on his face and could make anyone laugh at any time for no reason. As long as he was outside he was happy - looking for lizards or any other reptiles, swimming in the ocean, hanging with his girls, family and friends. Tommy had the power and ability to accomplish anything he put his mind to. His creativity and talents were many - drawing, guitar, writing, filming, snowboarding, golfing, pool, and expressing his artistry through tattoos for his many comrades. No matter where he went or whom he met, he touched the lives of many.  Although our time with him was short, he filled our world with love and laughter, and we will carry him in our hearts forever.

Survivors include his daughters, Gracie Jaelynn (4) and Madeline Noalani (2); his wife, Lacey; mother, Jana Hofer (Dennis) Olson; father, Tom (Donna) Kidman; brothers, Robert Kidman, Chris (Lacey) Kidman, Michael Kidman, David Kidman; sisters, Carol Kidman, Clover (Doug) McNeil; step-brother, Brad (Molly) Olson; step-sister,  Becky (Al) Curtis; nieces and nephews, Gavin Cox, Kortney Kaze, Sierra Toomer, Kayla Kidman, Makita Moore, Jazzmin Kidman, Carson Kidman, Brooke Curtis, Jacob Curtis, Hailey Olson, Jaden Olson, Tessa Fisk; brother-in-law, Spencer Grove; sister-in-law, Chantal Grove; mother and father-in-law, Michelle and Jim Grove; grandparents, Carl and Carol Hofer; step-grandma, Florence Olson; brother, Spencer Jennings; along with too many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and brothers in arms to count.  We wish we could mention each of you by name.

He was preceded in death by a cousin, Matthew Gray, brother-in-law, Danny Cox, grandfather, Maurice Kidman, grandmother, Rachel Fisher, uncle, Jimmy Kidman, a friend, Clint Wall and his fallen Comrades and Brothers in Arms.

PFC Cody James Towse
Bronze Star Recipient, Specialist Cody James Towse, was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 14, 2013, while in the service of his country and fellow soldiers. After a roadside explosive hit members of his unit, Cody rushed in to provide aid to the injured soldiers. He was then hit by a larger, secondary explosion. Cody died while trying to save his Army brothers.

Cody was born on Mother’s Day, May 8th, 1992, in Pasadena, CA and moved to Utah with his family as a young child.  Cody was always mature beyond his years, with a clear vision of what he wanted to accomplish in his life and the drive to make it happen.  He was adventurous and always up for a dare; he loved riding his long board and motorcycle, and was well known for his intelligent, off-beat, dry sense of humor.

Cody loved classic cars, classic rock, and shopping for vintage clothing at D.I. with his dad. He was also passionate about America and American history, which influenced his decision to join the military

Cody loved helping others and became an EMT on his 18th birthday.  He worked as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for Elk Ridge City.  He loved being a “First-Responder” and people remember him as always being the fastest to arrive at the scene. His parents fondly remember an occasion when Cody was so determined to respond to a call that he coasted to the scene of the accident on his motorcycle because it had run out of gas.  He was confident and competent in his work as an EMT and medic, and had aspirations to become a Life-Flight Medic.

Cody graduated from Salem Hills High School in 2010 and joined the Army shortly thereafter, choosing the Army because they assured him a position as a medic. He completed Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, where his father Jim, proudly attended the graduation ceremony.  Cody then trained as a medic in San Antonio, TX, and afterwards, was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX until he was deployed to the Kandahar region of Afghanistan in December of 2012.  Once in Afghanistan, Cody helped to train the Afghan medics in life-saving procedures.   He went on patrols twice a day every day, and loved what he did.   He became known to the local residents as the “Candy Doctor,” as he loved giving candy to the Afghan children.  For his 21st birthday, Cody asked only that his parents send him candy to give to the children.

Cody is survived by James Towse (father), Jamie Christiansen Towse (mother), Will Spencer Towse (brother), Callen Brook Towse (sister), Christian Paul Towse (brother), as well as a loving extended family, including his grandmother Dorothy Christiansen, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
