PICTURES TELL THE PAYSON STORY -- PAYSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY: PAYSON CO-OP
The Payson
Cooperative Mercantile and Manufacturing Institution was organized in
1869, writes L. Dee Stevenson of the Payson Historical Society in this week's column, "Pictures Tell The Payson Story." They were originally located in the Hancock Building, located
on the southeast corner of today’s Main Street and 100 North. In
1872 they had a new building erected at 11 South Main, just south of
the Payson Exchange Bank. The organization was
reorganized and T. H. Wilson was appointed manager. Twenty-six years
later in 1898 Mr. Wilson bought the business and it continued as T.
H. Wilson and Sons until about 1922. He then sold his stock to ZCMI
in Salt Lake City. His son, Stanley, served as manager for about
eighteen months.
Find the rest of the story, as well as photos depicting the Downtown location throughout the years, in this week's edition of The Payson Chronicle.

Miriam met her husband, Evan J. Theobald, at a dance rehearsal practicing for a Gold and Green Ball. Their life together was spent in Logan, Utah, Fort Worth, Texas, Kaysville, Utah, Edgemont Utah, La Canada, Diablo, California and Salem, Utah. Everywhere they lived they always had a bounteous garden and enjoyed sharing it with everyone. Miriam loved to can and freeze every vegetable and fruit. She is famous for her pickles.

She was gifted in cooking, baking, candy making and other self-reliant skills. Miriam always used her talents while serving in many different positions in the church, but her favorite calling was as a relief society teacher. She was grateful to have a lovely singing voice like her mother and used her gift of music wherever she lived.
Evan and Miriam served as Stake Missionaries and served a service mission in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on the church cattle ranches.
Miriam used her love for drama by writing programs and performing as Mini Pearl in the annual Hee Haw Program when they were Snowbirds in St. George. Jay and Miriam had so many good friends and loved living there in the winter months.
Miriam is survived by her children, Evan Dale (Nan) Payson, Utah, Daughter DeAnn Pierce (Jeffery) Glendale Arizona, Roger Dean Salem, Utah, Allen Dixon Cortez Colorado, and J. Dee Mapleton, Utah. She has 17 grandchildren, 10 grandsons and 7 granddaughters and 36 great grandchildren who have been so caring and kind to her.

A Page From The Past
A lot has changed in the layout process of The Payson Chronicle since the newspaper’s inception over a century ago. Pictured above is a paste-up sheet from the July 27, 1994 edition, a page that featured the demolition of Payson Downs Grandstand on South Main Street, where the Hillman Baseball Fields are now located. Today the newspaper’s pages are created and sent to the press digitally. |
