Sheri Sue Pexton

1969~2018

Our little Sheri, our sweetheart, mother, daughter, and sister, passed peacefully into eternity, on Thursday morning, on September 27, 2018, at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah, from a sudden complication, following a courageous battle with a long, lingering illness.  Sheri Sue Peterson was born on November 13, 1969, in Provo, Utah, to John Milo and Lena Corinne Charlesworth Peterson, the third of eight children.
Sheri arrived in the world full of boundless energy and enthusiasm.  All who knew her as a child, were touched by her curiosity of the world around her, her kind, compassionate, and forgiving nature, and her faith and devotion to the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Sheri shared her energy, enthusiasm, compassion, and faith throughout her life. In every way, she valiantly endured to the end.
Sheri grew up in Orem and Elk Ridge, Utah, and graduated from Payson High School in 1988, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Scottish Dancers, and the Concert Choir, where she made many cherished and lifelong friends.
Sheri attended Brigham Young University in Provo, where she met the love of her life, Kelly Leon Pexton, whom she married for time and all eternity in the Manti Temple on July 20, 1990. Kelly and Sheri graduated from BYU on the same day in April, 1992, and then moved to La Jolla, California, where she worked as a teacher in the San Diego Unified School District, the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, and later in Imperial and Moreno Valley, California.  Sheri used her gifted personality to transfer her contagious enthusiasm for math to her students, who performed well, loved her, and whose names she remembered throughout her life.
Sheri is the mother of Sarah Brooke and Tanner Kelly, who are the treasure and joy of her life. As a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sheri served in the Primary Presidency, and as a Sunday School Teacher, where she shared her love of Church History.  Sheri will be keenly remembered for her compassion and many acts of selfless service. Every day, she lit every room and warmed every heart.
Sheri is survived by her husband of Moreno Valley, California, her daughter, Sarah Brooke (Jonathan) Sterling, her son, Tanner Kelly Pexton, who is currently serving in the Mexico, Mexico City South Mission, her parents of Fillmore, four sisters, Julie (Kent) Haskell of Elk Ridge, Michelle (Eric) Brady of Lindon, Jonene (Spencer) Scoville of Highland, and Christine (Stephen) Schofield of Cedar City, and two brothers, John (Jenny) Peterson of Prosper, Texas, and Brian (Jessica) Peterson of Alba, Texas.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Lisa, and by her mother-in-law, Monna Lee Pexton.
A viewing will be held at the Anderson Funeral Home at 94 West 300 North, in Nephi, Utah, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.  Funeral Services will be held at the Elk Ridge Second Ward Chapel, at 259 Alpine Drive, in Elk Ridge, Utah, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, with a viewing to be held two hours prior to the service.  Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Vine Bluff Cemetery, in Nephi, Utah. A Memorial Service will be held in the Hidden Springs Ward, at 23300 Old Lake Road, in Moreno Valley, California, at a later date to be announced.  www.andersonfh1866.com

Sachiko Aldous Featured Artist At 2018 Payson Quilt Show

Pictured is Sachiko Aldous, the 2018 Featured Quilt Artist.

Each year the Payson Quilt Show at Peteetneet features a guest artist with a display of her quilts and other creations in a special area.  This year our featured quilt artist is Sachiko Aldous, the designer and writer of her creative blog, Tea Rose Home.

Sachiko was born in Japan, where she was raised, until moving to the United States at age 23.  Her mother recalls that Sachiko held her first needle at the tender age of two, and hasn't stopped creating since then. A few of her favorite creative pastimes are quilting, sewing, refashioning and jewelry making.  Her works have been featured in several blogs and magazines such as "American Patchwork & Quilting," "Quilts and More," "Altered Couture," "Jewelry Affaire," and "Haute Handbags." Sachiko lives in Utah with her husband (who happens to be her most favorite person to hang out with) and her three children.

Under the title of her blog, Tea Rose Home, is a subtitle which reads, "Everyday life with a little bit of flair." Sachiko certainly has that flair. Her works range from full sized quilts as well as very tiny miniatures, to quilt shop scenes in "Altoid" tins, handcrafted jewelry, 'repurposed wearables,' and home decorator items.  She seems to find a way to make everything around her beautiful and will leave you wondering, "Why didn't I think of that?"

You can tell Sachiko shares the sentiments of all quilters by a quote found on one of her blogs, "Saying good-by to a quilt you spent so much time and effort on is a little bitter sweet.  Well, I guess it is more sweet when you think that something you created will be used for years to come by someone you care about."

Her display will be well worth seeing during the the Payson Quilt Show, which runs from October 5th through the 13th at the Peteetneet Museum.  Show hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information about classes and other activities, as well as quilt entry forms, visit our web site at www.paysonquiltshow.com.  Help us celebrate the art of quilting in our community.

Payson City Events Coordinator Expects To See Large Crowd At Friday Night’s Pole Creek/Bald Mountain Fire Benefit Concert Despite Short Notice

Pictured standing at the podium in the Payson City Council Chambers, September 19, 2018, is Janeen Dean, who serves as Payson City Events Coordinator.  She and local musician Cody Robbins quickly organized the upcoming Pole Creek/Bald Mountain Fire Benefit Concert.

From the podium in the council chambers in Payson last night, City Events Coordinator Janeen Dean explained the impromptu origins and quick planning involved with tomorrow night’s benefit concert at the Peteetneet. Planning for the event was swift, much like the speed of the fast-growing wildfires spreading in the mountains nearby, but Ms Dean is optimistic that the event will receive great support from the public despite the short notice.

Musicians will perform on the Peteetneet Amphitheater stage. They will each lend their talents to raise funds for local firefighters and evacuees affected by the Pole Creek and Bald Mountain fires. Leftover funding will be allocated for replanting in the mountains, according to Ms Dean, should enough money be raised from ticket sales.

Ms Dean told Payson City leaders gathered at last night’s council meeting that the idea for the upcoming concert arose out of a text conversation that she and musician and fellow church congregation member Cody Robbins had over the weekend.  Not long after the two had decided to move forward with concert plans, Mr Robbins was able to get other musicians on board. “Sometimes events like this are supposed to happen,” said Ms Dean.

Along with Cody Robbins, musical performances by Deep Red Dirt, Firefly, Matt Lewis, Pat Swenson, The Real Doug Lane, Chelsey Stallings, Tim Mills, Bronson & Maisy, Stacy Despain, Brother Chunky, and Chris Henderson are in store for all who attend the fund-raising event.

Gates will open at 5:30 PM tomorrow evening, September 21, at the Peteetneet Amphitheater.  The stage is located on the southwest corner of the Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center property, 10 North 600 East, Payson, Utah.

Tickets are $10 per person, $40 per family, and free for children eight and under.  First responders who arrive dressed in uniform get in free also, along with their families, said Ms Dean.

Ms Dean is optimistic that the benefit concert will draw at least a thousand people to the Peteetneet grounds tomorrow night in spite of the short notice.  Over a thousand, she quipped, with the mayor and city council among the crowd.

Mourning the Passing of Friends: Forthcoming Funeral Services

“What we have once enjoyed we can never lose.  All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” ~ Helen Keller

Forthcoming funeral services are planned for the following friends from our community. Complete versions of these obituaries may also be found in The Payson Chronicle.

Romayne Anderson Phipps

August 8, 1922 - September 13, 2018

Our Mom, Romayne Phipps, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 13th, 2018. She was 96 years young. She was the daughter of Russell Edwin Anderson and Minnie Lenora Gould, born August 8th, 1922 in Nephi, Utah.

She was the third of seven children; the oldest being Ruby, followed by Mom's twin, Rodney. Next was a younger sister, Lorna Belle, followed by another set of twins, Ryland and Rachel. The youngest of the seven was Marian. They made their home in Cedar City where Mom attended and graduated from high school.

Mom married Wayne Harris, this marriage taking them to the Midwest; where four sons were born, all in different states. Russell Lee in Cedar City, Utah, Jerry Allen in Waterloo, Iowa, Michael Lynn in DuQuoin, Illinois and Harold Eugene in Terra Haute, Indiana.

In 1951 Mom became a single parent, left the plains of the mid-west and returned to her roots in Utah, finally settling in Payson. Here she raised her four sons to become men, all serving their country, three soldiers and one sailor (Jerry). Mike served a combat tour in Viet Nam, and then returned home to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Central America.

Mom loved horses and found enjoyment being a member of the Saddlettes Riding Club in Payson, later serving twice as their President. Riding horses in the lanes and fields of Payson attracted the attention of her husband to be, Gene Phipps, a Utah Ranch foreman from Sparta, North Carolina. A proposal and a beautiful bay mare as a wedding present led to their marriage in the spring of 1966. Thirty nine years of happiness followed them from Payson, to Evanston, Wyoming, Antelope Island, Buhl, Idaho and finally to Tooele, Utah after Gene retired as the General Foreman of The Island Ranching Co.

Gene Phipps left us on August 25th, 2005. Mom moved to Pleasant Grove to be closer to her sons. She was later sealed in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple to her husband Gene.

Mom is preceded in death by her husband Gene and her number three son Michael. Marian, the youngest daughter is her only surviving sibling. Besides Marian, she leaves a host of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love and sacrifice will forever remain in the hearts of her family, children, friends and all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 East Center Street, Provo, UT. Friends may call from 9:30- 10:50 a.m. prior to services.

Condolences may be expressed at www.bergmortuary.com.
