Mountain View Outpatient Mental Health and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Offering Free Seminar Series

Suicide Prevention through safeTalk™
“You can stop a suicide”

The tragedy of a suicide is not only the loss of life, but also the missed opportunity to help. In most suicide situations at least one attempt was made to reach out for help and struggling person’s words or subtle signs are frequently missed, dismissed or avoided.  All signs and suicide attempts should be taken seriously.

Utah ranks in the top ten for age-adjusted suicides, fifth for youth suicides in the nation, and is the seventh-leading cause of death for ages ten and older. On August 19, 2015, a 16 year old young man with a promising future committed suicide in his home and a couple weeks prior, another young woman in Utah County.   Between 2011 to 2013, Utah had the highest rates of suicide deaths, with 20.6 per 100,000 population while the national rate was 12.9 per 100,000 and is known as the “suicide belt” state.

Suicides that are carried out are only part of the problem.  The people who suicide attempts are suffering from severe depression, addiction, and other mental health problems. More people are hospitalized and treated in an emergency room for suicide attempts; in 2012 there were 2,743 emergency room visits and over 1,600 hospitalizations for self-inflicted injuries.  This complex issue is not openly discussed which victims and family members are stigmatized making it difficult to collect the data that is crucial to suicide prevention.

Mountain View Outpatient Mental Health and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention presents Answers, a free seminar series on Suicide Prevention. This course will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 in the Medical Plaza Classroom, at Mountain View Hospital. This seminar will be presented by Taryn Aiken, Utah’s Chair Founder for the American of Suicide Prevention.  After the suicide of her father and surviving her own multiple attempts to take her life, Taryn has dedicated her life to suicide prevention and is a certified safeTALK TM and CONNECT Posttension Trainer. For the past 10 years Taryn has facilitated hundreds of seminars, sharing the warning signs, risk factors for suicidal ideation. Taryn strongly believes that through education about mental disorders we can dispel the myths and stigma that keep people from seeking help; furthermore, she will share tools to help build resiliency in our communities.

To register go to mvpsych.com, call (801) 465-7178 or email candice.davies@mountainstarhealth.com.

Mountain View Outpatient Mental Health encourages anyone to attend whether or not they have been directly impacted by a suicide or suicide attempt.  Help stop this growing problem in Utah and save a life.

Meet Your Candidates

The August 11 primary election in Payson pared the number of candidates vying for three seats open on the city council this year from eleven to six. In the weeks leading up to election day, The Payson Chronicle attempted to contact each of the candidates in the race. We asked them to submit their story for voters to read in our print edition. We have since posted articles submitted by candidates who made it past the primary election on our website, paysonchronicle.com. Now, as the community prepares to cast its votes in the November municipal election, we invite you all to find out more about the candidates who hope to serve you. Here’s a link: http://www.paysonchronicle.com/election2015/

Peter Pan Opens August 27

L to R: Michael (Carter Maurin), Wendy (Mariah Webber), and John (Talon Maurin)

As Peter Pan and the Lost Boys have been longing for a Mother, Wendy, played by Mariah Webber, and her brothers John, Talon Maurin, and Michael, Carter Maurin, have just arrived in Never Never Land!

Mariah is no stranger to Payson Community Theater, having performed in Wizard of Oz, and Xanadu.  She is a sophomore at Payson High School.

The role of Wendy was originally played in 1985 by Becky Box Provstgaard.   In a nostalgic setting, she will be appearing as Wendy (2) many years later, with children of her own.

Talon and Carter Maurin are first timers with Payson Community Theater for this production and will be joining in this performance with their sisters, Lucy and Miranda, and their Mother Debbie, who are all three participating as Native Americans.  Debbie is also no stranger to the theater in Payson where she was in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Making theater a family affair, they were all in Spanish Fork’s production of Tom Sawyer last year, as well as previous school productions.

Let the adventures begin!   You will want to come and share them with this exciting cast of characters.

Peter Pan opens at Payson High School (1050 S. Main St.) on August 27-29, September 1-5 and closes on September 7.  There is a matinee on September 5, at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are available online at: paysoncommunitytheater.com.   They can also be purchased from NAPA Auto Parts, 190 E. 100 N., Payson, or at the door prior to the show.

Our deadline? Thursday at Noon

Boothe Brothers Provides a Venue for Beginning Artists

Pictured: Brynn Madsen outside Boothe Brothers Performing Arts Center on August 14th
Brynn Madsen of Orem has been taking music quite seriously for the past couple of years, and has an interest in pursuing it further.  Luckily, there are venues in the area that provide opportunities to perform before audiences, and one of those is Boothe Brothers, located at 135 North Main in Spanish Fork.

Some ten young performers were on hand Friday night, all students of Becky Millard of Orem, who runs Vox Fox.  Brynn’s mother, Jen Madsen, who was born and raised in Santaquin and is a PHS grad, located Becky via a web search for voice coaches.

The recital was well attended, especially considering the time of the year with so many people taking vacations, etc.  The performers ranged in age from very young, to high school age, some accompanying their vocals on guitar (as Brynn did) or keyboards.

Brynn has had other chances to perform live before audiences, twice at Joe Coffee in Payson, two recitals with Vox Fox, a school prom performance in Orem (Walden Academy), and at a street party in an Orem neighborhood.

“I’ve noticed more volume and control since she’s been taking lessons,” Jen says, “and she’s now working on stage presence.”

Brynn has unique tastes in music, with strong sensitivity concerning irony and angst.  Friday night, her two numbers were “Breaking Up My Bones” by Vinyl Theatre and 21 “Stessed Out” by 21 Pilots.
