Shirley Roberts Riley
St. George/Payson, Utah - Shirley Roberts Riley was born on November 17, 1926, in Salt Lake City, to Clarence J. Roberts and Afton Winegar Roberts. She stepped through the veil on December 31, 2017, to meet her beloved husband, William Howard Riley, who passed away in 2012 and her special granddaughter, Brandy Kay Riley, who passed away in 2016.
Shirley learned to play the piano at an early age and throughout her life she accompanied many soloists, groups and choirs, and also served as ward organist for many years. She was thrilled to conduct stake choirs in the presence of Apostle LeGrand Richards and President James E. Faust. Being an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in executive positions in Primary, Young Women and Relief Society.
She also enjoyed teaching in these organizations.
As a young girl, Shirley began writing poetry. Throughout her lifetime she composed several poetry books, story books and also two 'Life of Riley' family history books. She and her daughter, Deena, combined their talents in poetry and painting booklets. She and her daughter, Lisa, composed many songs together. At a later age Shirley learned to use the computer, and it was the joy of her life to learn to use the internet in researching family genealogy. Her passion for sports began at an early age, playing softball, basketball, tennis, roller and ice skating, racquetball, and golf. She and her husband enjoyed some of these sports together.
Shirley met the love of her life, Howard, at Bountiful Junior High School. While he served two years in the Pacific during World War Two, she spent a year in New York City with her sister. When Howard was discharged from the Navy after the war, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 18, 1946. In 1953 the Riley's, including two children, moved from Bountiful to Payson where they purchased and operated fruit orchards for fifty-five years and were blessed with three more children. After selling their orchard in 2001, Howard and Shirley retired and purchased a home in St. George, Utah.
Shirley's world revolved around her family. She loved having grandchildren stay in her home and playing. At the age of fifty-four Howard and Shirley adopted their severely disabled granddaughter, Brandy, and cared for her in their home until they were seventy-six years old. After placing her in a Care Center, they visited her daily until Howard's death. Shirley continued this until the passing of Brandy. She was the light and love of their lives.
Shirley loved planning parties and having friends in her home. She was often teased by her family for all the family reunions she planned, but they all had a great time whenever they attended them. She is planning a
great family reunion in Heaven.
She is survived by five children: Deena (John) Millecam, Alan (Christine) Riley, Kay (Karen) Riley, Lisa (Barry) Bradshaw, and Nanette (Scott) Day. She is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, a sister-in-law, son-in-law and five grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Applegate HomeCare & Hospice, especially Gina, Nakkole, Tracy and Ray, all the staff at The Retreat at Sunbrook, the Wound Clinic staff and Dr. Scott Barton and Dr. Alberto Brizolara, for the excellent care of their mother.
