PICTURES TELL THE PAYSON STORY -- PAYSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY: PAYSON MEMORIAL PARK – Part 1

(Above) Picture taken in the early 1920s looking west from the bandstand. Across the street we see the City Hall and Jail.

Payson Memorial Park is one of the major attractions within the city. The idea of developing the park originated in 1918 when Henry Erlandson was serving as mayor of the city. The idea of creating the park originated from a writing project at Payson High School. Melvin Wilson, a teacher at the school, had asked his students to write a theme on the possibilities for use of the area across from the city hall on Main Street. Thelma Erlandson, the daughter of the mayor and Jennie Reece, the daughter of a former mayor, wrote on the same subject for use of the area.
